సుందరకాండ.
అథ ద్విచత్వారింశస్సర్గః

తతః పక్షి నినాదేన వృక్షభంగస్వనేన చ|
బభూవు స్త్రాససంభ్రాంతాః సర్వే లంకానివాసినః||1||

స|| తతః సర్వే లంకావాసినః పక్షి నినాదేణ వృక్షభంగస్వనేన చ త్రాస సంభ్రాంతాః బభూవుః||

Then all the residents of Lanka became panicked hearing the sounds of the birds and the cracking sounds of trees.

విద్రుతాశ్చ భయత్రస్తా వినేదుర్మృగపక్షిణః|
రక్షసాం చ నిమిత్తాని క్రూరాణి ప్రతిపేదిరే||2||
తతో గతాయాం నిద్రాయాం రాక్షస్యో వికృతాననః|
తద్వనం దదృశుర్భగ్నం తం చ వీరం మహాకపిమ్||3||
స తా దృష్ట్వా మహాబాహుః మహాసత్త్వో మహాబలః|
చకార సుమహద్రూపం రాక్షసీనాం భయావహమ్||4||

స|| మృగపక్షిణః విద్రుతాః భయత్రాసాః వినేదుః | రక్షసాం చ క్రూరాణి నిమిత్తాని ప్రతిపేదిరే||తతః వికృతాననః రక్షస్యః నిద్రాయాం గతాయాం తత్ భగ్నం వనం వీరం మహాకపిం చ దద్రుశుః ||మహాబలః మహాసత్త్వః సః తాః దృష్ట్వా రాక్షసీనాం భయావహం సుమహత్ రూపం చకార||

The beast and birds became scared ran and flew away in different directions. The Rakshasas saw fierce portends . Then the Rakshasis with hideous faces awakened from sleep saw the devastated grove and the heroic Vanara. The powerful mighty hero Hanuman seeing the Rakshasas assumed a very huge form to create fear.

తతస్తం గిరి సంకాశం అతికాయం మహాబలమ్|
రాక్షస్యో వానరం దృష్ట్వా ప్రపచ్ఛుర్జనకాత్మజమ్||5||
కోsయం కస్య కుతో వాయం కిన్నిమిత్తమిహాగతః|
కథం త్వయా సహానేన సంవాదః కృత ఇత్యుత ||6||
ఆచక్ష్వ నో విశాలాక్షి మాభూత్తే సుభగే భయమ్|
సంవాద మసితాపాంగే త్వయా కిం కృతవానయమ్||7||

స|| తతః తం గిరిసంకాశం అతికాయం మహాబలం వానరం దృష్ట్వా రాక్షస్యః జనకాత్మజం ప్రపచ్ఛుః||అయం కః| కస్య అయం| కుతః కిం నిమిత్తం ఇహ ఆగతః| త్వయా సః అనేన సంవాదః కృతః కథం ఇతి|| విశాలాక్షి నః ఆచక్ష్వ| సుభగే తే భయం మాభూత్ | అసితాపాంగే అయం త్వయా కిం సంవాదం కృతవాన్ ||

Then seeing the large bodied mighty Vanara of the size of a mountain , the Rakshasas asked the daughter of Janaka. 'Who is this. Whom did he belong to ? Where did he come from and for what purpose. What was the dialog with him? Oh Wide eyed Lady you may tell. Oh Auspicious one let there be no fear. Oh dark eyed one ! What conversation did he have with you' .

అథాబ్రవీన్ మహాసాధ్వీ సీతా సర్వాంగసుందరీ|
రక్షసాం భీమరూపాణాం విజ్ఞానే మమ కా గతిః||8||
యూయమేవాభిజానీత యోsయం యద్వా కరిష్యతి|
అ హి రేవ హ్యహేః పాదాన్ విజానాతి న సంశయః||9||
అహమప్యస్య భీతాస్మి నైనం జానామి కోన్వయమ్|
వేద్మి రాక్షస మేవైన కామరూపిణ మాగతమ్||10||

స|| సీతా మహాసాధ్వీ సర్వాంగసుందరీ అబ్రవీన్ | భీమరూపాణాం రక్షసాం విజ్ఞానే గతిః మమ కా||యూయం ఏవ అభిజానీతా అయం యః యద్వా కరిష్యతి | అహేః పాదాన్ అహిః ఏవ విజానాతి | సంశయః న ||అహం అపి అస్య భీతా అస్మి| ఏనం కో ను అయం న జానామి | ఏనం ఆగతం కామరూపిణం రాక్షసం ఏవ వేద్మి||

Chaste Sita , a lady of beautiful limbs spoke. ' How do I know the fierce looking Rakshasas. Only you know who he is, and what he is about. A serpent alone knows the movement of another serpent. I am also scared of him. I do not know who he is. I think the one who has come is Rakshasa who can assume any form'.

వైదేహ్యా వచనం శ్రుత్వా రాక్ష్యస్యో విద్రుతా దిశః|
స్థితః కాశ్చిద్గతాః కాశ్చిత్ రావణాయ నివేదితుమ్||11||
రావణస్య సమీపేతు రాక్షస్యో వికృతాననాః|
విరూపం వానరం భీమ మాఖ్యాతు ముపచక్రముః||12||

స|| వైదేహ్యాః వచనం శ్రుత్వా కాశ్చిత్ రాక్షస్యః దిశః విద్రుతాః | కాశ్చిత్ స్థితః | కాశ్చిత్ రావణాయ నివేదితుం గతాః|| వికృతాననః రాక్షస్యః రావణస్య సమీపే విరూపం భీమం వానరం ఆఖ్యాతుం ఉపవక్రముః|

Hearing those words of Sita some Rakshasas ran in all directions. Some stayed there. Some went to report to Ravana. The hideous looking Rakshasas went to Ravana to tell about the fierce looking Vanara.

అశోకవనికామధ్యే రాజన్ భీమవపుః కపిః|
సీతయా కృతసంవాదః తిష్ఠత్యమిత విక్రమః||13||
న చ తం జానకీ సీతా హరిం హరిణలోచనా|
అస్మాభిర్బహుధా పృష్ఠా నివేదయితుమిచ్ఛతి||14||
వాసవస్య భవేద్దూతో దూతో వైశ్రవణస్య వా|
ప్రేషితో వాపి రామేణ సీతాన్వేషణకాంక్షయా||15||

స|| రాజన్ అమిత విక్రమః భీమః కపిః సీతాయా కృతసంవాదః అశోకవనికా మధ్యే తిష్టతి||సీతా హరిణలోచనా జానకీ అస్మాభిః బహుధా పృష్ఠా తం నివేదయితుం న ఇచ్ఛతి || వాసవస్య దూతో భవేత్ | వా వైశ్రవణస్య దూతః | సీతాన్వేషణ కాంక్షయా రామేణ ప్రేషితః అపి వా భవేత్ ||

Oh King ! A very powerful fierce looking Vanara , having had a dialog with Sita is standing in the middle of the Ashoka grove. Sita, whose eyes are like that of a deer, asked in many ways by us is not willing to disclose. May be he is the messenger of Indra or the messenger of Vaisravana. Or he may have been sent by Rama in search of Sita.

తేన త్వద్భుతరూపేణ యత్తత్తవ మనోహరమ్|
నానామృగగణాకీర్ణమ్ ప్రమృష్టం ప్రమదావనమ్||16||
న తత్ర కశ్చిదుద్దేశో యస్తేన న వినాశితః|
యత్రా సా జానకీ సీతా స తేన న వినాశితః||17||
జానకీరక్షణార్థం వా శ్రమాద్వా నోపలభ్యతే|
అథావా కః శ్రమస్తస్యసైవ తే నాభిరక్షితా||18||
చారుపల్లవపుష్పాఢ్యం యం సీతా స్వయమాస్థితా|
ప్రవ్రద్ధః శింశుపావృక్షః స చ తేనాభిరక్షితః||19||

స|| అద్భుతరూపేణ తేన మనోహరం నానామృగాకీర్ణం యత్ తవ ప్రమదావనం ప్రమృష్టం ||తేన యః న వినాశితః ఉద్దేశః తత్ర కశ్చిత్ న | యత్ర సా జానకీ (స్థితః) సః తేన నవినాశితః|| జానకీ రక్షణార్థం వా శ్రమాత్ వా న ఉపలభ్యతే| అథవా కః తేన స ఏవ అభిరక్షితా || సీతా చారుపల్లవపుష్పాఢ్యం యం స్వయం ఆస్థితా సః ప్రవృద్ధః శింశుపావృక్షః తేన అభిరక్షితః ||

That fierce looking Vanara destroyed the beautiful pleasure garden with many varieties of trees and animals. There is no single place not destroyed by him. Only the place where Janaki is , that place is not destroyed. It is to save Janaki or may be stopped due to exhaustion. Else why she alone is saved. The tree with tender leaves and flowers, that large Simsupa tree under which Sita herself is sitting is saved from destruction by him.

తస్యోగ్రరూపస్యోగ్ర త్వం దండమాజ్ఞాతు మర్హసి|
సీతా సంభాషితా యేన తద్వనం చ వినాశితమ్||20||
మనః పరిగృహీతాం తాం తవ రక్షోగణేశ్వర|
కః సీతామభిభాషేత యో న స్యాత్త్యక్తజీవితః||21||
రాక్షసీనాం వచః శ్రుత్వా రావణో రాక్షసేశ్వరః|
హుతాగ్ని రివ జజ్వాల కోపసంవర్తితేక్షణః||22||

స|| యేన సీతా సంభాషితా తత్ వనం చ వినాశితం | తస్య ఉగ్రరూపస్య త్వం ఉగ్రం దణ్డం ఆజ్ఞాతుం అర్హసి || రక్షో గణేశ్వర మనః పరిగ్రహీతాం తాం సీతాం యః త్యక్తజీవితః నస్యాత్ అభిభాషేత ?|| రాక్షసీనాం వచః శ్రుత్వా రాక్షసేశ్వరః రావణః కోప సంవర్తిత ఈక్షనః హుతాగ్నిః ఇవ జజ్వాల||

'The one with whom Sita spoke , that one destroyed the grove. That one with fierce form ought to be punished. Unless one has given up hope for life who else can talk to the one who captured the mind of the Lord of the Rakshasa'. Hearing those words of the Rakshasis , the lord of the Rakshasas, Ravana flared up like the blazing sacrificial fire, rolling his eye balls.

తస్య క్రుద్ధస్య నేత్రాభ్యాం ప్రాపతన్నాస్రబిందవః|
దీప్తాభ్యామివ దీపాభ్యాం సార్చిషః స్నేహబిందవః||23||
ఆత్మనసదృశాన్ శూరాన్ కింకరాన్నామ రాక్షసాన్ |
వ్యాదిదేశ మహాతేజా నిగ్రహార్థం హనూమతః||24||

స|| తస్య కృద్ధస్య నేత్రాభ్యాం దీప్తాభ్యాం దీపాభ్యాం సార్చిషః స్నేహబిందవః ఇవ అస్రబిందవః ప్రాపతన్ ||మహాతేజా హనూమతః నిగ్రహార్థం అత్మనః సదృశాన్ శురాన్ కింకరాన్ నామ రాక్షసాన్ వ్యాదిదేశ ||

From the two eyes of that angry one fell down drops of tears like the drops of ol from the burning lamps. To capture the very powerful Hanuman , he ordered Kinkaras who are as powerful as himself.

తేషా మశీతి సాహస్రం కింకరాణాం తరస్వినామ్|
నిర్యయుర్భవనాత్ తస్మాత్ కూటముద్గరపాణయః||25||
మహోదరా మహాదంష్ట్రా ఘోరరూపా మహాబలాః|
యుద్ధాభిమనసః సర్వే హనుమద్గ్రహణోన్ముఖాః||26||

స|| తరస్వినాం తేషాం కింకరాణాం అసీతిసహస్రం మహోదరాః మహాదంష్ట్రాః ఘోరరూపాఃమహాబలాః యుద్ధాభిమనసః సర్వే కూటముద్గరపాణయః హనుమద్గ్రహణోద్యతాః తస్మాత్ భవనాత్ నిర్యయుః||

The large bellied, large toothed , quick moving, eighty thousand Kinkaras , who are dreadful looking and powerful , interested in fighting wars , all of them armed with hammers and clubs came out of that palace.

తే కపీంద్రం సమాసాద్య తోరణస్థమవస్థితమ్|
అభిపేతుర్మహావేగాః పతంగా ఇవ పావకమ్||27||
తే గదాభిర్విచిత్రాభిః పరిఘైః కాంచనాంగదైః|
ఆజఘ్నుః వానరశ్రేష్ఠం శరైశ్చాదిత్య సన్నిభైః||28||
ముద్గరైః పట్తిసైః శూలైః ప్రాసతోమరశక్తిభిః|
పరివార్య హనూమంతం సహసా తస్థురగ్రతః||29||

స|| తే తోరణస్థం అవస్థితం కపీంద్రం సమాసాద్య మహావేగాఘ్ పతంగాః పావకం ఇవ అభిపేతుః||తే విచిత్రాభిః గదాభిః పరిఘైః కాంచనాంగదైః శరైః ఆదిత్యసన్నిభైః వానరశెష్ఠం ఆజఘ్నుః చ || ముద్గరైః పట్టి శూలైః ప్రాసతోమరశక్తిభిః సహసా హనూమంతం పరివార్య (తస్య) అగ్రతః తస్థుః||

They quickly approached the best of Vanaras seated on the archway like the flies rushing into the fire. They attacked the best of Vanaras armed with wonderful iron maces crowbars edged with gold, arrows resembling Sun. With hammers, sharp edged spears, tridents, barbed missiles and javelins, they surrounded Hanuman at once and stood infront of him.

హనుమానపి తేజస్వీ శ్రీమాన్ పర్వతసన్నిభః|
క్షితవావిధ్య లాంగూలం ననాద చ మహాస్వనమ్||30||
స భూత్వా సుమహాకాయో హనుమాన్మారుతాత్మజః|
ధృష్ట మాస్ఫోటయామాస లంకాం శబ్దేన పూరయన్||31||
తస్యాస్ఫోటితశబ్దేన మహతా సానునాదినా|
పేతుర్విహంగా గగనాదుచ్చైశ్చేద మఘోషయత్ ||32||

స|| తేజస్వీ పర్వతసన్నిభః హనుమాన్ అపి లాంగూలం క్షితౌ ఆవిధ్య మహాస్వనం ననాద|| మారుతాత్మజః సః హనుమాన్ సుమహాకాయః భూత్వా శబ్దేన లంకాం పూరయన్ ధృష్టం అస్ఫోటయామాస|| తస్య మహతా సానునాదినా ఆస్ఫోటితశబ్దేన విహంగాః గగనాత్ పేతుః | ఉచ్చైః ఇదం అఘోషయత్ ||

The illustrious brilliant Hanuman resembling a mountain roared , and shook his tail on the ground making a huge sound. Hanuman , the son of wind god, enlarging his body patted himself making a loud sound reverberating in Lanka fully. By that great frightening echoing sound all the birds fell from the sky. This he proclaimed loudly.

జయత్యతి బలో రామో లక్ష్మణస్య మహాబలః|
రాజాజయతి సుగ్రీవో రాఘవేణాధిపాలితః||33||
దాసోsహం కోసలేంద్రస్య రామస్యా క్లిష్టకర్మణః|
హనుమాన్ శత్రుసైన్యానాం నిహంతామారుతాత్మజః||34||
న రావణ సహస్రం మే యుద్ధే ప్రతిబలం భవేత్|
శిలాభిస్తు ప్రహరతః పాదపైశ్చ సహస్రశః||35||
అర్దయిత్వా పురీం లంకాం అభివాద్య చ మైథిలీమ్|
సమృద్ధార్థో గమిష్యామి మిషతాం సర్వరక్షసామ్||36||

స|| అతి బలః రామః జయతి | మహాబలః లక్ష్మణః చ (జయతి) |రామేణ అభిలాషితః రాజా సుగ్రీవః చ జయతి||శత్రుసైన్యానాం నిహంతా మారుతాత్మజః హనుమాన్ అహం క్లిష్టకర్మణః రామస్య కోసలేంద్రస్య దాసః ||సహస్రశః శిలాభిః పాదపైశ్చ ప్రహరతః మే యుద్ధే రావణ సహస్రం ప్రతిబలం న భవేత్ ||సర్వరక్షసాం మిషతాం లంకాం పురీం అర్దయిత్వా మైథ్లీం అభివాద్య చ సమృద్ధార్థః గమిష్యామి||

' Rama who has great strength is victorious. So is mighty Lakshmana. The king Sugriva ruled by Rama too is victorious. I , the Killer of the enemy army, the son of wind god, Hanuman I am the servant of Rama ,the Lord of Kosala who can overcome all difficulties. While I pound with rocks and trees in thousand ways in a war, not even a thousand Ravana's can match me. While all the Rakshasa are watching, I will destroy Lanka , saluting Maithili , having accomplished my task I will return.

తస్య సన్నాదశబ్దేన తేsభవన్భయశంకితాః|
దదృశుశ్చ హనూమంతం సంధ్యామేఘ మివోన్నతమ్ ||37||
స్వామి సందేశనిశ్సంకాః తతస్తే రాక్షసాః కపిమ్|
చిత్రైః ప్రహరణైర్భీమైః అభిపేతుస్తతస్తః||38||
స తై పరివృతః శూరైః సర్వతః సుమహబలః |
అససాదాsయసం భీమం పరిఘం తోరణాశ్రితమ్||39||

స|| తే తస్య సన్నాదశబ్దేన భయశంకితాః అభవన్| సంధ్యామేఘం ఇవ ఉన్నతం హనూమంతం దదృశుః చ ||తతః తే రాక్షసాః స్వామిసందేశ నిఃశంకాః చిత్రైః ప్రహరణైః కపిం అభిపేతుః||సుమహాబలః సః తైః శూరైః సర్వతః పరివృతః తోరణాశ్రితం భీమం ఆయసం పరిఘం అససాద||

They became terrified hearing that loud sound. They saw towering Hanuman like a cloud in twilight. Then the Rakshasas ordered by the king without any doubt attacked Hanuman with dreadful weapons. The very powerful one surrounded by all the warriors, took the iron beam from the archway.

స తం పరిఘమాదాయ జఘాన రజనీచరాన్|
స పన్నగమివాదాయ స్ఫురంతం వినతాసుతః||40||
విచచా రాంబరే వీరః పరిగృహ్య చ మారుతిః|
స హత్వా రాక్షసాన్ వీరాన్ కింకరాన్మారుతాత్మజః||41||
యుద్ధకాంక్షీ పునర్వీరః తోరణం సముపాశ్రితః|

స|| సః తం పరిహం ఆదాయా రజనీచరాణ్ జఘాన | వీరః సః మారుతిః వినతాసుతః స్ఫురంతం పన్నగాం ఆదాయ పరిగృహ్య అంబరే విచచార|| వీరః సః మారుతాత్మజః వీరాన్ కింకరాన్ రాక్షసాన్ హత్వా యుద్ధకాంక్షీ తోరణం సముపాశ్రితః||

He took that beam struck the night beings. That hero then moved about the sky like the son of Vinata attacking a serpent raising its head.The hero , the son of wind god having killed the Kinkaras , wanting to battle more , climbed up the arch way again.

తతః తస్మాద్భయాన్ముక్తాః కతిచిత్తత్ర రాక్షసాః||42||
నిహతాన్ కింకరాన్ సర్వాన్ రావణాయ న్యవేదయన్||43||

స|| తతః తత్ర తస్మాత్ భయాత్ ముక్తాః కతిచిత్ రాక్షసాః సర్వాన్ కింకరాన్ నిహతాన్ (ఇతి) రావణాయ న్యవేదయన్||

Then some of the Rakshasas relieved from fear reported to Ravana that all the Kinkaras have been killed.

స రాక్షసానాం నిహతం మహద్బలం నిశమ్య రాజా పరివృత్త లోచనః|
సమాదిదేశాప్రతిమం పరాక్రమే ప్రహస్తపుత్రం సమరే సుదుర్జయమ్||44||

స||సః రాజా రాక్షసానాం మహత్ బలం నిహతం నిశమ్య పరివృతలోచనః పరాక్రమే అప్రతిమం సమరే సుదుర్జయం ప్రహస్త పుత్రం సమాదిదేశ||

That King having heard that the great force of Rakshasas was killed, with eyes rolling commanded the difficult to conquer and matchless son of Prahasta.

ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే ఆదికావ్యే వాల్మీకీయే
చతుర్వింశత్ సహస్రికాయాం సంహితాయామ్
శ్రీమత్సుందరకాండే ద్విచత్వారింశస్సర్గః ||

Thus ends the Sarga forty two of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
